We have been overwhelmed with the
response from ROOTS delegates towards the issue of Human
Trafficking. The appeal was launched at this years ROOTS
event and is part of an ongoing campaign launched by
ALOVE – The Salvation Army for a new generation
(UK Youth Work) in February. The appeal also follows
the efforts of ROOTS Canada two years ago, who raised
over $30,000 (CAN) for a specific project in Bangladesh.
Through a series of specially produced
videos, workshops and worship experiences, delegates
engaged with the issue throughout the weekend in age
appropriate ways. For the first time the ROOTS KIDS
venue in the UK took part in the financial appeal which,
for them, was focussed on children without choice.
The financial response to the appeal
for finances to support projects working with victims
of Human Trafficking and the development of Education
and Awareness programmes. £120,000 was raised
at the ROOTS event and the money continues to roll in.
This figure smashed the previous ROOTS
appeal record of £60,000 which was given a few
years ago to freeing slaves in Sudan. This finance,
and ongoing financial commitment, will enable the Salvation
Army to resource projects all over south east Asia and
in other trouble spots throughout the world. The money
will make a massive difference to the lives of vulnerable
adults and children who are potentially, and are already,
victims of Human Trafficking Gangs.
Many people have also been inquiring
about the use of resources and videos to enable them
to tell their local church, work colleagues, community
groups and friends about this issue. Because of copyright,
film permissions and contextual sensitivity, we are
unable to give out the current edits of the videos shown
at ROOTS. However we are producing a full resource pack
in partnership with the Salvation Army International
development Department in the UK. The pack will contain
all sorts of age appropriate materials, links and information
about other campaigns and will also include very similar
videos to the ones that were shown at ROOTS. These packs
will be available by the end of June and most information
will be downloadable for free from this website.
