As
a leader, what do you aspire to be known
as? What would you like people to say
about you if they were asked to offer
some feedback on your behaviour and performance?
In Leadership Matters this month, we will
be investigating some of the key behaviours
that leaders should exhibit that are based
on personal choices and assumptions
Signify offers a complimentary addition
to the now standard review process of
360° Feedback where an individual
is assessed by people from above, beside
and below themselves in the corporate
hierarchy. "360° FeedOut"
is an intentional, proactive process that
begins as soon as you choose it to and
harnesses the power of aspiration into
shaping behaviour through conscious choice.
At Signify, we want to be shaped by, and
live out, our values; leadership matters,
character matters, people matter and you
matter. We must intentionally choose to
behave in a way that reflects these values
and continue to aspire to fulfilling them
completely.
'What do you want people to say about
you?' Possible aspirations and their behaviours
and choices are outlined below.
"I want people to say that...
...they feel valued." Everyone wants
to feel worthwhile. Think of how and when
you feel valued and put the things that
come to mind into practice with those
you work with.
...I am encouraging." Assume that
everyone needs and responds to encouragement
and behave accordingly. Be sensitive to
people's differences and reward them appropriately.
...I have depth of character." People
buy into their leaders before they buy
into their leader's ideas. Seek to live
a life worthy of the respect of others
and your 'weight' as a leader will increase.
...I invest in and empower others."
Assume that many people have difficulty
achieving success. Help others to experience
quick, easy wins. This builds their confidence
so that they can become the man or woman
they aspire to be.
...I free others to work to their potential."
Most people are naturally motivated. Work
hard to create an environment in which
people are free from discouraging influences.
...I really listen to them." Assume
that people like to talk about themselves.
Ask questions that help you to really
know them and what makes them tick. You
can then empathise, understand and release
them to realise their potential.
...I have integrity." Only promise
what you know you can deliver. Make sure
that what you say matches up with what
you do.
That is how "360° FeedOut"
works. Try it for yourself. Identify what
you aspire to as a leader, that is, what
you want those around you to say about
you. Then distinguish some key behaviours
that you will need to shape and develop
and then single out some fundamental choices,
based on these aspirations and behaviours,
that you will have to make. For example,
if you aspire to be known as reliable,
a key behaviour must be to be punctual.
For certain individuals a vital choice
will be to establish a disciplined morning
routine, for others, that will not be
an issue. Only you can say what your behaviours
and choices will have to be.
Reflective Questions
What do I aspire to be known as?
What behaviours must I develop?
What choices do I need to make to realise
these things?
